However, as an experienced backcountry skier, I can tell you skis that wide are rarely worth it.Īnother thing to consider is side-hilling and kick turning. So if you’re comfortable with skis that wide in all conditions, understand how shitty skiing skis that wide in terrible conditions is, and are willing to make that sacrifice for some sweet pow turns, then go for it. They are often steep dense trees with shitty snow or vary narrow hard packed icy hiking trails. And remember, your exits are usually the most challenging part. ![]() The snow you’re skinning up to might be amazing, but the snow in some areas on your way up and down is potentially going to be awful. The truth is, you’re going to experience the worst snow conditions you’ve ever skied on in the backcountry, even on good snow days, especially around breckenridge where snows gets heavily wind affected and at altitude where it gets heavily sun affected. ![]() Although that’s an ok width that you’d probably be fine with, it’s definitely not ideal and here’s why.Įveryone thinks when they’re getting into backcountry, it’s to ski pow. I’m going to have to disagree with most of the people responding. I'd consider myself to be advanced when it comes to skiing level. I know I want to ski powder but will they be good to do some of the more groomed stuff as well? For some extra context, I'm a female, 5'6" and around 140 pounds. I live in Breckenridge, CO, which is great for skinning groomed trails and touring the backcountry for some powder. Hi all! Longtime skier here but just starting to get into the ski touring/backcountry scene. I was tempted to go online and buy since it's cheaper but all this great information made me realize that I could use a fitting and some expert input so I'm going to the local ski shop here. Update: You all are fantastic! Based on the feedback, I decided to go a little skinnier. ![]()
